Stamped from the Beginning

For the last two weeks, I have been knee-deep in Ibram X. Kendi’s Stamped from the Beginning. I reserved this book at the library after a summer study of his book How to Be Antiracist. I knew there was more that I needed to learn. I knew there were stories and experiences that I had not ever heard about in my study of American history.

As the events unfolded yesterday, I was surprised, but I wasn’t shocked. Had I not been reading this book I would have been shocked.

The anger and the entitlement of the group that stormed the capital is an anger and entitlement that has been a part of our country from its very founding. The belief that some are better than others and that some lives matter more than other lives is woven into our very foundation.

The question is what will do in the light of what we saw and what we experienced yesterday. What was brought to light on Epiphany yesterday is a reality that we must all wrestle with and we must all answer the question what will we do in light of this revelation?
