One of my favorite albums to listen to at Christmas is Carrie Underwood’s. The first track is called “Let There Be Peace,” and it’s always brought me back to center in the midst of the holidays because it reminds me that there are so many who aren’t at peace. During the holidays that is true for those who have lost someone they loved or lost a job or a home. Her song also recognizes that there are so many places in the world who are living in constant uncertainty because of violence and war.
Grief takes so many different shapes and it doesn’t really tell you when it is going to paint the present moment with the tinge of sadness. How can it be that you can be so content and joy-filled in the celebration and merriment of the holidays and yet still feel the deep well of wishing that loved one could be there with you or that you were where you used to celebrate?
Maybe that’s why the familiar songs of a Christmas album or a familiar meal or a favorite getaway bring us so much comfort in this pause between reflecting on the year that has almost passed and setting intention for the year ahead. Maybe this is why kids have a break from school, so that we can remember and revel in the beauty that surrounds us not only in the beautiful places but in beautiful people who are walking this life with us. Maybe we can whisper this prayer or sing Underwood’s song, “Let there be peace,” as we head into a new year.
