Be what you is

My Memaw always said, “Be what you is and not what you ain’t. Cause if you is what you ain’t, you ain’t what you is.”

My Mimi used to say, “Remember who you are.”

You would think I would have caught on by now, but it’s just beginning to come into focus.

It had a lot to do with the old man who was walking his Scotty at my running lake today. I realized that’s what others want of me. They want me to have the safety and security of being able to walk my dog on the same path everyday. If I had that, they would think people would think I had a full life. But the truth of the matter is: I don’t want that. It’s not who I is. I don’t want to have a predictable, safe life. I want to be knocked off kilter and never know what lies ahead.

That’s who I is.
