It’s been a long time since I’ve been on my second cup of coffee at 7:30 am.
It’s been since my teaching days, but as my alarm went off this morning at 5:00, I was excited. I am encountering fewer and fewer people who can say that their jobs are truly worth waking up in the morning to do. The more people I encounter and talk to, the more people I encounter who are doing this job until they can get to their dream job or until they can get to the next step in their careers.
Constantly looking forward and continually hoping for something else.
It’s what I encourage my congregation to do to a certain extent: to look beyond this world and these interactions to detect and encounter the divine in daily life, but at the same time if we are always looking for what’s next, then we miss the present moment.
This sip of coffee.
This word.
This key being pressed on this keyboard at this point in time.
This moment for me is a reminder of where I have been and where I am going.
I’m excited and thankful for both.
